Alaska

Alaska

When I think back to all the dreams that have come true since I made my list, I have to take notice of how one dream has led to other dreams happening. My dreams of learning to salsa dance, of meeting an incredible group of friends who were outgoing and positive in life, and hiking Half Dome in Yosemite led me to Alaska.

The first night I went to a salsa club I saw a young man dancing with a cute girl. They moved so well together and I enjoyed watching their flow hoping that someday I would be good enough to dance like them.

The next night, in search of that positive group of people, I went to something called a Meetup for yoga. I got lost on my way to the woman’s house and ended up being late for the meeting. As I took my place and moved into triangle pose I looked up and saw the guy from the salsa club.

Over the next month, Bryce and I became friends. Each Friday we saw each other at yoga and during the week he taught me to dance. We both joined a hiking club and the opportunity to hike Half Dome in Yosemite became available. Together we climbed the summit and realized that we were well-suited hiking buddies.

When he asked me to go to Alaska with him, I was in the chaos of trying to find a home. Though I had no time, I’d made the commitment to myself – if a dream came to me then I would take the opportunity. No excuses.

Just a week before leaving, we booked our plane tickets, two hotel nights, and a car. The rest we left to fate.

Alaska is a state of pure beauty: mountains, glaciers, rivers, and wildlife surrounded us. We hiked, kayaked, took a bus tour of Denali, a boat tour of the Kenai Fjord, did yoga on top of a mountain overlooking a glacier, drove hundreds of miles and laughed until our stomachs hurt. It was a true adventure of trusting that whatever we needed would come to us, whether it was a hiking trail or a place to sleep.

More than seeing one of the most pristine places left on earth, I found a friend who taught me to act like a kid once in awhile and not take myself too seriously.
