I loved China, but unfortunately what I remember most was how the pollution choked me. In the two weeks I spent in the country, I saw a blue sky only twice. It wasn’t rainy weather, but a thick layer of smog that caused me to cough after a few days.
As I walked the streets and saw the adorable baby butts that poked out from slits in the back of toddler’s pants, I wondered what legacy this industrious country would leave to these beautiful children. For anyone who has gone to China can plainly see, this culture has always pushed to create. From the amazing Xian warriors who were created to replicate the first emperor’s army, to the Great Wall of China, and now the Three Gorges Dam, China has proven the magnitude of its talent to build. In the name of commerce, and as they sell the west cheap products, they are killing their environment.
As I traveled along the Yangtze river, where over a million people were displaced by the building of the Three Gorges Dam, I thought about the Grand Canyon. What if we covered its beauty under a lake? This is what the Chinese have done to the Three Gorges; one of the most beautiful places on earth is now under water.
China has a landscape of mountains, rivers, rice paddies, and farmlands. The people have a love of art and community. They gather in parks dancing ballroom, playing games, working out together, and sharing stories. At the Tang Dynasty show, I watched acrobats contort their bodies in ways that seemed inhuman. Women spun dishes on long poles as they danced around the stage never dropping a plate. The opening games of the Olympics proved the Chinese’s incredible artistry.
My dream is to someday return to China and find that they have used their talents to create a cleaner world for their children. It would be magnificent to climb the Great Wall once more, but this time under a blue sky. It would be a great gift to travel the countryside and see people’s smiles, which were hidden under white masks. I can always hope for a miracle that the Three Gorges will be fully seen by future generations.
I realize that I’m am not innocent in this dilemma. I buy products without thinking about the smokestacks in China spewing pollution with American brands on the chimneys. I know I must improve if I wish to see my dream for that blue sky.
